# Mail Server Connections

### Basic authentication <a href="#basic-authentication" id="basic-authentication"></a>

Basic authentication (with username and password) is only supported for custom mail server connections. Connecting to Gmail or Microsoft accounts requires OAuth2 for security reasons.

Instructions for connecting to a custom mail server can be found in the [Custom Mail Server: Basic Authentication](/email-this-issue/email-this-issue-for-jira-server-data-center/documentation/administration/mail-server-connections/custom-mail-server-basic-authentication.md) article.

### OAuth2 credentials <a href="#oauth2-credentials" id="oauth2-credentials"></a>

OAuht2 credentials are required to connect to Microsoft as well as Gmail servers.

To manage the OAuth2 Credentials, go to the **Email This Issue** configuration and choose **OAuth2 Credentials** under the **Settings** menu item.
